The MS 460 is a tough, high-performance saw that's easy to use and maintain. It has more engine power and more torque than the MS 440, yet weighs only 14.3 lbs. A lightweight flywheel makes limbing easier. An optimized anti-vibration system and decompression valve ensure quicker starts and smoother operation. Wrap-handle version (R) also available.

Summary:
A really fine saw, can't be beaten when used with a 20-25" bar. Lighter than anything else of comparable horsepower.

Strengths:
Cuts VERY fast. Better weight/horsepower ratio than comparable Husqvarna saws.

Weaknesses:
Balance is nose heavy when a long 32" bar is used. Costs more than cmparable Huskys.

Highly recommend. Its my first real saw I would say as I cut a few cords of wood each year for home use. Have a Poulan pro 325 with 20 inch bar. This is a very good saw but can't handle the large oaks and ash I run across sometimes. The Stihl 460 is amazing! I'm impressed for sure.

Strengths:
Impressive cutting thru large oaks. Starts easy and without effort. have a 28 inch bar on it which performs flawlessly.

Weaknesses:
Not a weakness but cost is higher than most other saws of this size.

Summary:
bought this one in 1997 when they came out. Still running strong with over 7000 hours of hard cutting time. I wouldn't recommend anything other than this product. It has powered through some hairy situations from routine removals to fire hardened timber. It may cost more, but you will have the reliability and durability that you would expect from stihl.

Strengths:
Best overall saw on the market today. This is a machine that was made for the task at hand. The power to weight disttribution is outstanding. It has more than enough muscle to chew through any of the hardwoods of the northeast. Not only do you have the power required, but there is also the issue of maintenance. Care for this tool is truly as easy as 1 2 3.

Weaknesses:
The weight with a longer bar of 28-32 inches can be tiresome and the cost is a little more than other saws of comparable size.

I RUN A 25 INCH WIDE NOSE RS BAR WITH RSC CHAIN AND IT CUTS VERY FAST. I CUT ONLY DEAD LOCUST AND IT EATS IT UP WITH POWER TO SPARE, IT PUT THE DUAL PORT MUFFLER COVER ON IT AND ALSO ON MY 660 AND THEY MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE IF THE SAWS ARE RETUNED CORRECTLY.

I run a 25'' bar with .404 full skip chain, can notice a little difference in power but it really cuts and is a bit easier to sharpen with the bigger chain, but I would say that a 25'' bar and 3/8 chain would be the best power to chain/bar ratio!

Strengths:
Just bought this saw with a 25" bar and run it through a few tons of oak and ash. Used 041 AV for years and whilst still a superb saw the MS460 is in a different class. Truly superb and endless power. Reliable and very smooth powerfeed. Far better than the MS441 which feels like Jelly / Jello and unconnected. It's far more economical than reviews elsewhere would have you believe on both petrol / gas and chain oil. Have no fear buy this saw it will last for many many years if you take care of it.

Weaknesses:
None - but still wish Stihl would use alloy rear handle end instead of Plastic.

The kill switch is hidden and difficult to use. Moving "up" to turn off is anatomically difficult and counter-intuitive. In some situations, damn near impossible to turn off without removing your hand from the handle to find the switch. Summary:
Best cutting saw I've ever used. I decided to get this model over the MS 660 because the 660 is really overkill for most of the jobs I do. If I ever find that I have to have the power of the MS660, I guarantee that the job's gonna pay enough I can buy the MS660 and still clear plenty of coin. The initial investment can be alot to swallow but if you do tree service a saw like this will make life easier and make you money. I HIGHLY recommend this saw with a 25" bar. All I buy is Stihl regardless if it's a weedeater, blower, or chainsaw. If Stihl makes it, you can bet its one of the best money can buy.

Strengths:
Lots of torque. I bought mine today and love that this saw which feels pretty close in weight to my 20" MS310 cuts at least twice as fast. Im running a 25" bar. I had a tree removal job for a customer today one oak ~40" and one pine about 30"-ish. Not once during the job did the saw bog down. It just kept on cutting no matter how deep the bar was buried. I would highly recommend this saw to anyone who needs alot of power yet, you don't want excessive weight. If this saw ever wears out, I'll be buying another. Anti-Vib is really nice. This saw is easier on your hands than my Stihl MS 310. Saw has unbelievable power-to-weight performance. Feels about the same in the hands as my MS310 but this thing has soooooo much more balls. If your gonna buy a good saw to use day in and day out I would definitely suggest this model. If not this model then at least one in the pro series from Stihl. AWESOME SAW!!!!

Weaknesses:
It did flood once but, it was my fault.

Summary:
Impressed with the engineering/design of Stihl chainsaws. Having worked as a saw mechanic where Stihl and Husky are equally used in logging, I found Stihls easier to fix and have fewer breakdowns when maintained. Ironic, love working on a Stihl, but they hardly need it! I've had my 066 for a few years, had the 064 before that, and the 056 was my first Stihl. I enjoy the lighter weight yet respectable power of my MS460!!!

Strengths:
Its a STIHL. Lighter than than my 066, but it'll bury a 30 inch bar and skip tooth chain in conifers without a problem - while running an 8 tooth sprocket! The balance/handle design feels right to me so I find it comfortable to use. Really like the convenience of their fuel/oil caps. Waiting to see if the caps are over engineered verses the brutal simplicity and total effectiveness of the old ones.

Weaknesses:
Its not a 066.

this saw will do whatever you want. if you need a 660 or 880 thats for super large stuff on a regular basis. the 460 i have used and it cuts 3'to 4' oaks very nicely. i used it one day all day on on anything from 18" to things as big as 5' in diameter and this saw cut through it all with ease. its a saw that gets alot of work done in a much better then a reasonable amount of time. i would reccomend this saw to anyone who wants a solid workhorse of a saw. i do not recommend this saw to a beginner. this saw has alot of torque and is without a doubt a saw machine. if you dont have alot of big stuff your better off with a smaller saw. this saw will severly hurt perhaps kill you if you dont know what your doing. please be careful if you chose a stihl 460. with all the weaknesses i listed im just being critical. dont let them stop you from buying this saw if this is what you want.

Strengths:
great ergonomics, awesome cutting power, sleek design for a big saw, good feel, good chain brake, great air filter assembly, awesome air tight fuel & chain bar lube caps, easy idle adjustment, idle's very well, easy to remove and adjust chain. no need for tools to check and clean air filter.

Weaknesses:
chain lube channel clogs rather easy, a little heavy but highly mangable, chain costs $30-$35 dollars to replace, likes high test gas, is a little on the gas guzzle side, can be a little finacky to start,

I just cannot believe the difference between my ms310 and the ms460 magnum. If you want a real saw, the ms460 magnum is the one for you. It can do it all without wearing you out.

Strengths:
Just bought an MS460 Magnum saw with 30" Stihl bar used. Had been used to fell timber by a professional logger then sat around for about 5 yrs. I got it home and tried it out. Kinda worried it might be worn out but for the price $400 I figured it was worth a chance. Looked really good and maintained. Had a MS 310 (got stolen) that was a good saw I thought- had to use my homelite xl super to fill the gap- now after trying this ms460 out - I will NEVER own a different saw! WOW if I only knew about this saw before. Incredible power! Twice as fast as my ms310 was.. This is a Real Saw !! Cutting large fir and maple like butter! Easy to work on, adjust, maneuver (wrap handle). Love the sound.. It's screams! Just unbelievable power.

The bar and chain need a lot of oil, I overheated the bar end sprocket thinking I had set the oil correctly. I now use the P for plenty rule, and generally leave it set high. Wish Stihl sold the standard Duro chain loops for it, as you can currently only buy the rescue variant or a reel of the standard Duro. Tiny tiny niggles in what is a superb piece of engineering.

Summary:
Highly recommended. In Australia these cost $1800 Australian Dollars with 20" bar. This is a solid chainsaw and has never missed a beat. I first balked at the price but a logging friend of mine has one and told me if I don't buy it just because of the price then I am a Fxxxxxx idiot. Best 1800 bucks I ever spent !!

Strengths:
Cuts Tasmanian Oak (Eucalyptus regnans) as if cutting cheese. Heaps of power. I have used and abused it for 2 years.

Weaknesses:
None so far. It's always a shame to put it away at the end of the day

Summary:
Bought the 460 a few years ago with a 28" bar and it has performed very well on both hard and soft woods (i.e. oak and pine). Just put a 36" bar on it a month ago for a little more reach on the larger pines and firs. It does a great job on the soft woods without bogging down but I haven't used the larger bar on hard wood yet.

Strengths:
Starts easy, just like every Stihl I've ever run. Runs like a banshee. Every bit of power you need from a saw in this class. I have run many Stihl saws, as well as many other brands, and find Stihl saws to be more reliable than any other brand; the 460 is no exception.

Weaknesses:
A bit heavy for limbing, and a bit pricey. That said, it is definitely worth the money.
