Summary:
I bought this saw after my old Stihl 026 would cost more in repairs than it would to buy a new saw. It's pretty fast cutting, especially with a yellow bar and yellow chain (not the green anti-kickback type). After doing lots of consecutive cuts, it does feel a lot heavier a lot faster than my old saw did, but it works great otherwise.

Strengths:
Lots of power, the decompression valve makes it easier to start when cold, though it's not even necessary after the saw has warmed up a bit. It can run an 18" to a 25" bar, though it will handle a 30" bar with a semi-chisel chain. There is a slight decrease in performance running the 30" bar, as would be expected.

Weaknesses:
Gets heavy after a while, and the bar tensioner hangs up at times when trying to move it far back in the slot. I also miss the translucent fuel tank that my old saw had. Stihl branded accessories are pricey, and only available through authorized dealers, so OEM parts can't be bought over the internet.

Summary:
Slightly dissapointed, but it runs like a warhorse if you can get it started.

Strengths:
Very powerful saw even with a 25" bar. Eats through 20 - 24" trees in record speed.

Weaknesses:
A ROYAL PAIN to start when cold (room temperature). Offten the engine will flood it's self while trying to start cold. Then the plug has to be taken out, dried, and try to shake the heavy saw upside down to remove any access gas out of the cylinder. (No, I don't throttle it!) I have received no advise from my local dealer and would appreciate any input from folks with a remedy or like problems. lil.budro@verizon.net

Summary:
a great choice for the heavy cutting needs of most farmers or firewood cutters and it saves $ compared to the 361 a small light saw for limbing like the ms 260 or ms250 is good to have. the 390 saw is heavy compared to ms260. but the small saws are not good for a 20" bar like 390 can handle.

Strengths:
Wide Power band w/ 20" bar, its 64cc, there is no replacement for displacement lower $ than pro saw like the 361 not too heavy has forged rod & crank bearings are pro style so it is a rugged design fast cutting with full chisel chain low vibration

Weaknesses:
plastic sprocket cover one piece sprocket clutch cover- replace with pro style when its worn out you can't say its a 361, and its heavier than 361. yes, the 361 is a great saw, if it only was only $479 and in stock when I bought

great saw. i would recommend to any some what expeirenced user,

Strengths:
great saw, got it in the late winter/spring. i've never had any problems starting regardless of temps. and it runs like a champ. my saw has an 18" bar the price was right and they were running a deal on chains for that size bar w/purchase. i will be stepping up to a larger bar and full skip chain. and theres not a doubt in my mind that the saw can handle it.

Weaknesses:
the only real weakness is the size of the saw. its harder to get around than a smaller saw. but anylarge saw will have that problem. the weight isn't a factor the 390 wieghs the same as a 290 but has more power. the only concern i have is with the oiler. it doesn't seem to me to be oiling enough, so im going to switch to stihls oil and try that. but the bar and chain are in great shape, no burn marks.

Summary:
I love the saw. I own the 361 and its a better saw than the 390 but my 390 almost hangs right with the 361. I use both saws but the 361 is worth the extra cost if you use it all day, lower weight less vibration just make things easier. But I don't mind using the 390 all day either. both are good saws.

Strengths:
Price, displacement or wide power band, sounds good too. This saw is for the experienced user, I do not recommend it for the casual user due to its high power. Has pro style crank bearings and forged rod for durable performance.

Weaknesses:
Vibration system is rubber so not as smooth as 361, no clear fuel tank, needs the replaceable chain sprocket like the pro saw uses that can be added later.

best saw i have ever used

Strengths:
very easy to use this saw. it starts very well, choke it till it kicks then flip to high idle and away we go. i do alot of storm damage clean up and also seasonal logging for walnut logs. i mainly use a 20" bar but also carry a 25" for the bigger trees. anyone that does much cutting can run this saw all day and will still have enough energy at the end of the day to go home and play with the kids. this saw will handle anything i throw at it.

Weaknesses:
there are no weaknesses as far as im concerned. the sprocket has lasted me more than 600 hours and is still in good shape. there is no problem with the oiler. just because the oil hasnt drained as fast as the gas doesnt mean anything. the 290 and the 310 will also make an unexperienced cutter a bit nervous with the oil consumption.

GREAT saw. Love it, have had it for over a year now and would not buy any other saw unless I was cutting some BIG HARDWOOD. Muffler mod is easy, just look through arboristsite.com.

Strengths:
Good power, but more is available with ported muffler.*WINK* need to upgrade the oiler. Doesn't care what it's cutting. Running a 20" bar with full chisel full comp chain with the depth gauges filed down to the mark. Just cut some 10-11" red oak and it didn't care. I really want a 25" bar but have to wait to find the money....

Weaknesses:
Factory Muffler chokes it way back. Oiler does not put out quite enough volume.

Strengths:
Runs like a champ, I have cut a lot of wood this years and have not had a problem out of this saw, keep the chain sharp, blow out the air filter, I am now running a 18" bar and it sings!!! But I know this saw can take more..Have had it deep in to the trunk of trees and it is powerful..never miss a beat, fuel consumption is awesome. The oiler seams to be not working properly, but after talking to a stihl rep, it is built to researve 50% less oil, nice!!Have cut side by side with my buddies and noticed them refueling 2 to , I want name the brands they were using ...hehe!!!

Weaknesses:
Some plastic parts in places that i wish could have been left alone, however this done for weight, some EPA restrictions that hold it back. but we all know how to take care of that.

I don't see how these can be destroyed or burned up. Then again, I never abuse or neglect mine baby... I mean saw!

Strengths:
Great Power! Great Brake! Love the ruggedness as my F-250 has tried squishing it with little sucess. Ended up replacing the plastic over the filter on that one. Cranks easily if I have used it within the month. (I do heavy use but have long times between use, 3 months normally)

Summary:
Awesome saw. Highly recommend it to anyone who cuts and splits their own firewood. It has the same weight but tons more power than the Farm Boss and it'll get you through that huge pile of logs a lot quicker that the smaller saws.

Strengths:
Just bought this saw recently. I could tell from the moment I started it that it was going to be a HUGE improvement over my little MS250. On its very first startup, it only took a few pulls to get it going. After that, it will almost always start by the third pull (two on full, one on half). I cut 24"+ logs for firewood and this thing just burns right through them like butter. My suggestion, if you're relatively well experienced with chain saws, get a yellow full chisel chain and save the green chain for the dirty stuff. I have a 20" bar on mine but I bought it with the intention of getting a larger bar at some point. From what I can see so far, it'll easily handle a 24" (25") bar/chain. Huge power and makes saw dust like it's its job...wait...it IS its job. Great saw (so far).

Weaknesses:
None so far. It is a bit heavy but considering its power, I really shouldn't complain.

Even if you are a homeowner and might have some bigger jobs in the future this saw is perfect! I have a 28 inch bar on mine, most people don't need anything bigger, it handles anything i can throw at it. As far as the wieght goes think about it, with power you want wieght! You don't want so much power kicking back into your leg do you? For an overall saw(home or forest) its WELL worth the money!

Strengths:
I was seriously thinking about getting a 460 but this 390 is AWSOME even with the 28 inch bar. There is enought power in this saw with the 28 bar and plenty left over for real heavy jobs. The brake engagment is nice, you dont have to push on it hard nor it doesnt set easily when its hit by branches.

Weaknesses:
There is enough power there, a person that has not worked with a saw much might have control problems until they get used to it. Have respect for it. And it is just abit heavy, but i don't think it bad.

I had been using a 025 stihl for a while before this. While it cut well it was a bit overwhelmed by what I was throwing at it. 025 has 3hp the 390 has 4.3. Trust me big difference. Same log the 390 is roughly a third faster going through it. A lot of reviews say t o just get the ms361 I couldn't justify the extra money. Plus its a professional unit, I'm not a professional. They say the 361 is lighter. What the hell is a pound?? If you have the arms to use it 1 pound is not enough to make the upgrade. As with everything in this world people always buy over and above what they REALLY need. If you are in my shoes and are using a 025 and are looking for an upgrade the ms390 is the best unit in the midrange saws. It has biggest engine which translates to more torque and hp. Is excellent on bar oil also which you can adjust the flow, plus its good on fuel as well. Has the forged heavy duty internals. Do your homework and buy what you need. Don't bother with the farm boss, or the 310 spend the little extra and get the ms390. Great saw, you won't regret the upgrade.

Strengths:
Plenty of power for big and small jobs

Weaknesses:
None I can see yet. The men on here, or by the way I've been reading they might as well be women complaining about the weight hit the gym and stop crying. if you have pencil arms you will have issues with this saw. If you have real man arms and like to work you won't have issues.

Strengths:
MS 390 starts good and runs excellent. Full choke and when it pops to run drop the choke to the open high idle and it will run everytime. Anyone flooding it is using the full choke after the first fire of the engine will experience flooding. Any saw will. Excellent saw! Stihl owner for life!

Strengths:
This is a great saw. I've cut more wood with this saw than i have with every other saw i have owned. In my opinion there's only one other one out there that would even come close to keeping up with this one and thats the old McCulloch Pro Mac 650. I see alot of people have trouble starting this saw. There's only one reason they have so much trouble and that's because they don't know what they are doing. I never have to pull the cord more than 4 times no matter how long it has sat or how cold it is out. I also own the MS361 and the 390 will run circles around it.

Weaknesses:
There's really nothing I can complain about!

this saw is just the 290 on steroids. never had one problem with this saw. would recomemed it to anyone who has moderate expirance. just make sure when cutting small logs to watch your legs when the log comes rolling @ you.

Strengths:
the power is great for a larger mid-sized saw. have been able to burry the 25in. bar into many red oak and many silver maples and had no problems(with the help of a wedge or two). starts every time i grab it.

Weaknesses:
it's a bit okward up in a tree. wish there was a way to upgrade the oiling system. fuel consumption isn't the best but makes up for it with the power.

Great

Strengths:
Strong running saw, I've cut up probably 30 long pines knocked down by hurricanes and high winds here in north Florida. I bought a pro chain from Bailys, with no anti kickback feature. Its an agressive chain and I keep it razor sharp with a Dremmel tool and a round grinding stone. It has a 25/24(?)" bar. It runs hard and will flat spit wood chips..

Weaknesses:
Heavy for weak people. If you are small statured or not particularly strong, buy a smaller saw. My model saw was made prior to a compression release, and I've broken 3 pull strings. That tells you how hard you have to pull this saw to start...Had to step up in string/rope diameter to keep from snaping pull start rope. Accesories from Stihl are expensive.

Summary:
An alright saw, if you keep it running. If you start this frequently for clearing areas etc...better buy yourself a couple of extra pull-start pawls and spools as this one's all plastic in this area. Very much an overall disappointment for a Stihl...wonder what they'll cut corners on next?

Strengths:
Handles longer chain than most...I use a 20 inch and it pulls it with no problem.

Weaknesses:
The starter drive pawl is a single, plastic, single-boss swivel type which is far more cheaply made than the old farm bosses. I used the old farm bosses for years and this one barely made it 1 year and a half; The carb compensator gave me a fit when starting in 97 degree, humid weather and the pawl dropped from its mount and got chewed up inside the latch corral. Now this thing could be made of gold, but it's worth crap to me with 5 cords to go and no service centers open.

I would not recommend this, or any other Stihl chainsaw to anyone. I also own a Stihl MS 250C chainsaw which is the worst tool purchase I have ever made. It is now 1 week after Hurricane Irene. Trees are down all over my farm and neither one of my 3 year old saws is in working condition.

Strengths:
Lots of power

Weaknesses:
Hard to start when cold. On-off lever jams up. My saw is 3 years old and the lever is now non functional. I must take off the back cover to adjust the internal mechanism to the choke and run positions. To turn the saw off I must again take off the cover and pull the spark plug wire off of the plug. For $500+ you would think that Stihl could design usable on-off switch.

Summary:
I am very impressed with this saw and plan to use it for a very long time. Eventually I'll get a bigger one for felling larger trees but this will always be my first saw.

Strengths:
I have taken multiple 24-36" Ash, Elm, Locust, Boxelder, Cottonwood and Pine without any real issues. With a good blade this saw always gets it done. Keep your blades out of the dirt, clean your saw regularly (including the oil reservoir), keep a good filter & plug in it and don't let it sit on its side too long when fueling. Try not to run it out of fuel or sometimes it can flood trying to restart even if you use the proper technique. Do this and this saw is unbeatable for its size.

Weaknesses:
Once in a while the recoil has a slow return, usually when flooded or cold (very frustrating). Patience is the key. Have avoided flooding by not letting saw run out of fuel and fast fuel up procedure. The longer the saw sits on its side the higher your chances of it flooding. Recently I noticed a piece of sawdust enter the oil reservoir and the oiler stopped working. After 6 years of use, I finally need to fix something. Not bad. Huskys are good too, just don't care for the blade change procedure.

Summary:
This is a great saw for people who know how to use a chainsaw. Don't go out and buy this saw if you've never used one before. From what I've read, it is relatively modifiable with aftermarket parts (Bailey's, etc) but it really doesn't need it. Stihl really hit the mark with this one.

Strengths:
Very powerful. Puts the Rancher 455 to shame. Spools up very quickly especially with a semi-chisel/full-skip chain and pro bar. Never had a problem with the chain loosening through normal use. Starts EVERY time by the third or fourth pull. Decompression button isn't necessary but it's nice to have. Oiler works very well with a 20" bar. Cranked it up to full output and its oil to gas use is about 1:1. So when you run out of gas, you can bet you're out of oil too. This thing hogged through gnarley 30" hickory like it was rotten pine. The trick is (like any saw)to rock the bar up and down pivoting on the spikes and you can cut through anything. I cut about 3-4 cord of firewood (oak, maple, black locust, hickory)for private use every spring and this thing never skips a beat.

Weaknesses:
None that really matter. It is a bit heavy and you know you've used it at the end of the day. Kind of wish it at least had an aluminum sprocket cover instead of the plastic one.

Summary:
Like any other saw I always wish I had a bigger one but this one has handled everything I've thrown at it including huge white oaks (40+ inches in diameter).

Strengths:
Good saw for most folks that cut alot of wood. Handles big hardwoods easily. Runs like a scalded dog after you "fix" the muffler and re-tune the carb. I keep a 28 inch Cannon Superbar on it for dropping the big trees and keep a 20 and 25 inch on hand for downed trees. It may be a little heavy for some folks but I like the weight for sawing logs. The weight lets the saw do alot of the work.

Weaknesses:
Goes through fuel pretty quick. These saws shipped in Europe with a fully ported muffler. The U.S. version's muffler has only 2 ports which are both smaller than the 4 ports on the Euro version. The deflector at the exit port is also bigger on the Euro model. Once the US muffler is modified to match the Euro muffler and the carb is tuned you will find that it takes alot to bog this saw down even with a 28 inch bar. Instructions are available all over the internet.

Cut 50 cord a year. Bought the MS391 because I had an 025 and a 250. Good luck overall. The 025 is a lot better saw than the new 250, newer 250 wants to kick back when starting-pull the rope right out of your hand. The MS 391 does not have the r's that I think a big horsepower saw should. The clip fell off the drive gear and the chain fell off within the first 5 minutes of using the saw. I have a 1984 Sachs Dolmar 116, 60cc saw, it will cut circles around the Stihl MS391. The Stihl is a 64cc saw. Not sure how the pro series of Stihl are, but this one in not worth the money!!

I did learn the hard way at the beginning about only choking it ONCE, and as soon as it acts like it wants to fire, immediately put the lever back to fast idle so you don't flood it. But that decompression valve is it's downfall and not worth the hassle.

Strengths:
Runs well after it's warmed up. Have had it for 5-6 years. It's tough. Very easy to take off air filter cover. Hardly ever needs any adjustment.

Weaknesses:
HEAVY! Wish I'd gotten something lighter. I'm a 67 year old female and still cutting my firewood, several cords per year, but I can tell after cutting for a while the weight difference from my old saw. I absolutely HATE that decompression valve!! My old saw that I had for 20 years, a Husqvarna Model 61, was wonderful and didn't have a decompression valve. When you first start it cold, you only want to full choke it once, then put it back on fast idle or you will for sure flood it! But so many times I've had to push the valve, try to pull start cord, it jerks your arm off. Press the valve again, pull cord again, it won't pull stops abruptly and jerks your arm off again. I've had to do that over and over numerous times then finally it will work. Every time I get ready to start the saw cold, I dread it and wish I had my Husqvarna back! Then, when it finally starts, DO NOT attempt to pull the trigger and try to rev up the saw, you'll kill it. Just let it sit and idle for a few minutes, then rev it up. Once you go through the nightmare of starting the saw, it's fine, runs fine and everything is rosy. My old saw would fire up on the first or second pull every time and you weren't worn out from starting the saw before you even begin to cut wood! Would I buy this saw again? NEVER! In fact, I've thought that maybe I should just sell it and buy something else.
