Great blower. Two suggestions for owners. First - if you only use 1 section of tube it makes a noticable increase in the CFM. Less restriction = more flow. Second, if you want more MPH you can buy just the narrow tube that comes with the BG85 for about $10 over the parts counter.
Strengths:
This blower has surprising power for a consumer model. The Stihl commercial stuff does not really have much more output. Construction is really solid. I've dropped it pretty hard more than once.
Weaknesses:
It could be easier to start. It always has run for me, even on stale fuel. It just takes more pulls than I would like.

Good for a home owner. Nice not to be teathered to a power cable. The BG55 is pretty stout, its got more power than I expected.
Weaknesses:
Not enough to rip wet leaves off the driveway, you probably need a backpack blower to do that. Could take a few less pulls to start, but I often have bad fuel.

Strengths:
Powerful; blows everything I point it at, no matter how heavy or wet.
Blasts goo and muck out of gutters and downspouts. Blower tube breaks in half by twisting on or off, making it easier to store. Good value price-wise.
Weaknesses:
Floods easily, at which point you are screwed and it will not start. Most online reviews mention this and advise not to use choke or priming bulb more than once or twice. It's really heavy and torques quite a bit, but it does not come with a load-bearing strap. Has capability to vacuum if you have the kit, but that's separate as well.

I have learned to leave the switch to the off position, push the primer button about 10 times, give it a couple of pulls, turn the switch to on, pull a couple of times and it starts great.

Great performance, poor reliability. Carb sells for half price of entire unit too.
Strengths:
Very strong and mid-weight blower at a good price. Amazing performance over my Toro electric. I run it all weekend due to my 2-1/2 acre lot surrounded by 20 acres of woods.
Weaknesses:
Zama carb is always clogged. There's some ports in the carb that are sealed with epoxy which breaks down and clogs ports. I was able to get spare carb parts from the dealer because he warranties a lot of them. Fuel tank is two piece too, and leaks from somewhere not visible. Have to drain fuel after every use.

I enjoyed it while it worked. But should have lasted a little longer than the waranty.
Strengths:
Powerful and great for homeowner. Pump bulb 3 time and choke. Pull a couple of times and starts. shut choke off. If dies leave choke off and pull start. it starts easy just dont prime more than 3 times.
Weaknesses:
Had little over 2 years and lost compression and shop says piston is bad or scared. Used same oil and gas mixture in trimmer from same gas can and no problems with trimmer. Both Stihl. Seems it will cost as much as a new one to repair.

Ran well for first 10 months, then began losing power after running for two minutes, then quit completely after three minutes. Re-starts ok, but quits again after 2-3 minutes. Cleaned gas tank and carb; replaced fuel filter, air filter, and spark plug; use Stihl oil and 89 octane fuel. Same problem exists. Choke lever isn't long enough to use easily when wearing gloves. The low speed ajustment screw is obscured by the handle and requires an offset screwdriver to adjust. The spark plug is crowded by the handle and difficult to remove/install. Generally poor design for routine maintenance.

This machine is not worth the money and Stihl does not stand by their products. I owned the blower 3 years using it 1-2 times a month during warm weather. I had to sink $75 into it after 1.5 year. Currently the machine will not start needs a carburator according to the dealer. I contact Stihl and they will do nothing for me, blaming me for the problems. Highly rated and fairly quiet. No real problems with starting and operation.

READ THIS - MAJOR FAILURE POINT - This Fall I started to use it and the choke lever was loose and did not work. I opened the air cleaner and discovered that there should have been a small silver nut that holds the choke arm together, and it was missing. It seemed obvious that it had fallen off and been ingested by the engine, which no longer runs. Of course, this happened as soon as my warranty ran out. Back to the dealer, which resulted in some earnest discussion and my call to the reginal manager. He agreed to have the dealer tear it down and look for engine damage, with the condition that I would pay $$ if there was none.
As it turned out, this is exactly when had happened, and Stihl is covering this under warranty. IF YOU OWN THIS PRODUCT you should check for this problem, you could save your blower from serious damage.

Decent Motor but under powered.

Never Buy this hoping to vaccum. That is a serious piece of trash. Chokes on everything. Expect to constanlty fight to keep the vacuum running.

I have a Stihl string trimmer with the same engine and it runs fine on the same gas used in the blower so bad gas is not the issue. I was relying on the Stihl name for quality and it may be available in their chain saws but I made a mistake with the blower. Cheaper machines seem to be more reliable and if they fail are cheaper to replace and less agrivating to own.

Very Very hard to start. Dealer tuned it up, charged me again for replacing a just installed brand new air filter and spark plug but the problem remains. Dealer service is rather expensive and most parts are not available except from Stihl Dealers.

Had 2 BG 55's, I must be a slow learner. Runs great if and when it starts. I'm very familiar with power equipment, and this product is a BEAST to start. Floods easy, if it starts in ten pulls, I was lucky. Usually 20 to 30 pulls. Had units back to several Stihl Dealers in Wisconsin and Florida, use fresh gas, etc. No real improvement. Son in law has same unit, with same problem. I will never buy Sthil again!!

I have been using the blower and weed wacker for about 5-6 years. Always started for me. Let me tell u some facts here. First, Doesn't matter how many times u push the primer the gas goes back into the gas tank. You cannot flood it using the primer bulb. Use choke then starts to run then quits, at this point it is flooded, you turn off choke and then pull, it starts up and runs good. This is the same for the weed wacker.
Weaknesses:
Carb is a little temperamental. I have to richen it up a little on the high side. I think this due to having old gas. Which is my fault. A couple of tricks I would recommend is to let it idle for a minute to warm up. Second is to let it cool down for about 30 sec before shutting it down.

Asked all my landscaping buddies, "What can I buy that I won't have to work on?" and they all said get a stihl. Well I went out and bought this thing and boy did I get it. Worked great the first time and that's it. Now every time I try to use it if it doesn't start within three pulls your screwed. It will not run again for a week. Pull the plug and it's dripping in fuel.

Blowing is usually the last thing I do after mowing, edging, and running the weedeater. The last thing I want to do it pull a blower 30 times to get it to start after all that work. If you don't mind doing that after you are worn out from all the other work, then this unit is for you.
Strengths:
Works well when it will start. Nice power.
Weaknesses:
It either is very, very hard to start or it won't start. Very frustrating.

Strengths:
Would not start out of box. New gas and Stihl oil. Followed starting instructions in book. Primed as book stated. Dealer said it was flooded. His mechanic took about 15 minutes to start. Dealer said to prime only once with cold engine. I have had major problems starting about every time I use the blower. Starts great with warm engine. Going back to dealer.
I own other Stihl products and never have a problem with starting them.

Will buy Echo next time. Or a Craftsman.
Strengths:
Like everybody else, runs great when it starts. Used 2nd season and wouldnt start. Flooded. Was told it was bad gas and operator error. I have been using leaf blowers since they were invented. The teenagers who stole my Craftsman (15 years old) now have a more reliable blower than i do.
Weaknesses:
Hard to start. I need a blower that works under normal conditions not optimal conditions. Hard to start. If and when it floods which it will you are screwed. By the way, the people at the service desk talk to you like you are an idiot.

I didn't really want to but I returned the blower to the power equipment store and they happily refunded the purchase. I went right to the local big box and bought an Echo blower that starts like a normal 2-cycle engine should everytime without the flooding problems experienced with the BG55.
Strengths:
The blower seemed like a well built machine, and is powerful when it starts.
Weaknesses:
Was never able to get this blower started after the first day. The blower flooded and once that happens forget starting this thing.

I think it is a real pain in the ass, if they were going to make a professional product that was going to be sensitive, don't make it, the people that buy these units are people that make a living with these products and need to rely on them.

Only ran 4-6 months when acceleration decreased, then top speed decreased. Poor starting. Adjustments made it worse. Replaced plug; hard to reach plug (poor design). Kept good fuel and filter clean. WTF? My time is worth more. I would pay double for something reliable. Avoid. POS.

Powerful enough for northern california leaves. Easy fuel access, good fuel filter.

If you follow the above for starting and still have start problems, you may have a bad spark plug, ignition module, or the ig. mod/flywheel air gap is off.This is assuming compression is good
Strengths:
Awesome blower! Works great starts good. You have too know how to start these small 2 cycle engines or you will become very frustrated.Pushing the primer bulb does not pump fuel into the engine, it merely fills the fuel lines, so you can prime till your hearts content.Turn the choke on , pull rope 1-3 times or until it fires (or pops) then it will usually die, turn the choke off 1-3 pulls and it should start but bog under acceleration, this is normal and will straighten out in 30 - 60 seconds the fuel is still filling up carb passages.
Weaknesses:
As far as hard starting and not reving or bogging, you probably have a plugged spark arrestor in the muffler, very easy to remove and clean (like a spark plug) Clean with wire brush These clog up for 1 of 2 reasons, 1 gas/ oil was mixed too rich on oil (the most common cause)more is NOT better when it comes to oil (unless you like cleaning spark arrestors)Mix 2.6 oz of Ultra oil to exactly 1 gallon of gas (measure at the pump)2 letting the unit idle for long periods.

pull fast about 6-10 times.
Once I hear it start to catch, I am easy with the throttle until it clears up then I run that bitch full throttle.

Stay away from Stihl ! I have a 1 year old BG55 gas blower and have a 2 year dealer warranty. Will barely start and will not run. Dealer says needs new carburetor for $100. Whole unit costs $149. Even though warranty is 2 years, dealer says Stihl will not cover a carburetor. I only use non ethanol gas in the mixture and run dry at the end of the season. I got 10 years service out of my old yellow McCullough. I also have a 10 year old Shindaiwa gas hedge trimmer and string trimmer that runs like silk year after year. The dealer now tells me Stihl uses a poorly manufactured carb unit and now only recommends Echo and Shindaiwa. I will never buy another Stihl product. They steal from your wallet!
