Strengths:

Weaknesses:

i think its a great saw! i'd recommend replacing the chains it comes with(i chose oregon S62, much better chain). i've had my saw 8 months and after i got familiar with it i was and am still very satisfied. keep it clean, use good quality mix and bar oil, use fuel stabilizer, sharpen it when you refuel and add bar oil to it(just takes a minute) and you'll have yourself a good reliable and affordable chainsaw!

Strengths:
good on gas(also seems to use up a tank of gas and bar oil at the same rate which is convenient), easy to start, chain tension adjusts easily, easy to change chain, easy to clean, nice travel case. you really cant ask more from a cheap saw.

Summary:
They work good when given the proper breakin and fuel/oil. THis saw is good for the money.

Strengths:
Reasonable cost.spare parts available online. Has enough power for most cutting situations in the types of wood I have cut. Sensitive to oil brand and fuel/oil mix ratio. after testing different oils and ratios I have found a 40:1 mix of the following to work well: 2.6 oz of walmart st aircooled 2 stoke with .5 oz. of amsoil air cooled 2 stroke. try to use a no-ethanol fuel if you can find it.

Weaknesses:
Reqires special tool for adjusting low and high speed carb. screws. can use a electrical crimp connector held by hemostats as a substitute for the correct tool. Saw requires a 'breakin' period if you want to maximize life of saw. 40 min. of idling should be used as a min. breakin time.this breakin can be done in segments ,10 min. each time with a 5 min cool down between runs.Of course a $500 saw won't need a long breakin, but this ain't a $500 saw.

Putting the gas cap back on is an EVENT. Bar oil needs to be put in twice for every gas fill. Nice case, perhaps you can use it for something else. You won't want to put the saw in the case, needs to be stored with CAPS pointed toward the sky. Makes a big mess in the case. Poulan did not respond to me about the gas cap issue. Summary:
I thought I was getting a quality product, I was wrong. Products and companies like this one is why people won't buy their products again. Word of mouth is a far better advertisement the ads in the paper or on the internet. If products continue with this quality Poulan will go out of business in a few years.

Strengths:
Emptying your wallet. The path of bar oil to find your way out of the woods. Exercising the right arm trying to start it. Practice the shot put to go for distance throwing it when you need to get work done and the saw refuses to work. Taking precious time away from your family to once again try to fix the saw and driving everywhere to accomplish it. Tie a rope to it throw it in the river, makes a great anchor.

Weaknesses:
Cutting, running, starting, idling, gas and oil caps, chain loosens on it own, oil leaks all over the place. Warranty is worthless, three weeks after ownership it will not run, took it to get fixed and Poulan refused the warranty dealer fixed it for free anyway. It's biggest weakness is cutting wood.

Summary:
It is a great saw for what it is, but obvisouly doesn't hold up well under moderate use. Buy it for the occasional limb or tree that needs to be cut. Save your money if it is for yearly firewood duty or something more critical that demands a dependable, long lasting saw. Poulan products do not have the durability that they once did, and as such, that is reflected in my decision to purchase higher end products from this point forward (I upgraded to a Dolmar 5105, excellent brand/ awesome saw).

Strengths:
Light-weight chainsaw with adequate power for larger jobs. Easy to use with a very effective anti-vibration system. Inexpensive to buy and maintain with a good availability of parts at local stores.

Weaknesses:
Lacks any real durability. Mine lasted less than 15 hours over the span of a month. It worked fine and had great power, then on the last day it ran, it started to bog down and die under load. Each time it was very difficult to restart and would only run for several cuts before repeating the same cycle. After doing this nearly ten times, it would no longer restart. Also, the primer bulb stopped pumping about a week after I purchased the saw.

Summary:
A great saw especially for the money. God her about 2 1/2+ years ago. Read a lot of reviews online about people having trouble after a year or so. I think they just didn't take the time to clean the saw properly. I clean the basics (guide, clutch cover and air filter) after every hard use. Always go out with a few sharp chains. I do use mine for more than I think the saw should do ( 13 cords a year, maybe more) and she still purs like a kitten. Bottom line: treat her good and she will reward with years of service.

Strengths:
Very reliable (starts perfect every time, no more than 8 pulls even in 15 deg. temps). Easy to disassemble and clean basic compartments. No leak from either cap. Carb is set nice from the factory. Fast cut not much bogging, sharp chain works wonders on keeping it running strong for years.

Weaknesses:
Carb. adjustment is a little tricky for less experienced.

Summary:
This review is for the related, but somewhat different saw, the Poulan Pro PP4218, sold by Wal-Mart. The main difference appears to be it lacks the Anti Vibe & tool-less chain adjustment of the AVX model. I saw that as an advantage, given the problems many reported with the goofy plastic gears & metal chain tension adjuster problem. Save yourself the grief, this saw has nice features, a great price, and the 'normal chain adjustment. This way you don't have to pay $$ to have Poulan send you the retrofit parts. So far the saw has been exemplary in performance & consistency, but admittedly, I'm only two weeks & five hours of hard use into it - so time will tell. Given Walmart's 30 day limit on power equipment returns, I figured I'd torture it during that time, & return it upon any sign of weakness. So far, it's a keeper. I got a couple extra heavier duty OREGON chains ($ 26 for two pack at Lowes), and that bumps up the performance greatly. I did have the saw tuned at the local saw shop. Earlier he had sold me a Pro Saw - an Echo CS-530, (a very sweet unit & whole other review), and when I had the Echo in for a carb adjustment / tuneup, I mentioned the Poulan stumbling upon rev up, though producing great power. He said he'd be glad to fiddle with the H & L screws, so he did, and it does run quite nicely now. I do think that many of the complaints that the Poulan brand saws have would be addressed if they just had local dealer support of this kind - that Lowes or Home Depot are unable to provide. I suppose one could always just take their "big box store" purchased saw to the local dealer - and pay their 'tune-up fee' (my dealer did the Poulan tune as a favor to me an existing Echo saw customer) - if they even knew they could do this. It would make any saw run better - and be worth it even if the shop charged $ 20 or so to do it. I did do a timed cut on a 12 inch diameter sweet gum tree - both the Echo CS-530 & the Poulan PP4218 did it in the same time, 13 seconds flat. I think the main difference is the Echo Pro Saw would just last much longer if used daily by a workman, or heavily on one's ranch. The engine does run more powerfully, like a turbine. But one expects that in a 51cc $ 480 saw, no doubt. The Poulan does a great job for being a $ 150 saw - and it came with a nice case for that price, the Echo did not. Overall, I give the Poulan high marks for function, features & performance. Durability is the only area of concern - but I think that if these saws a 'performance & quality proofed' - that is, run hard & frequently for their first month - and no weak spots / defects appear, then you've got a keeper, at a very reasonable price. My first saw, years ago, was a little green Poulan Micro XXV, bought for $ 29.95 at Handyman hardware in San Diego, and that humble little saw lasted for 15 years when it finally died of neglect & fuel left to rot in it. It ran hard as you can imagine, in many many cutting projects. If this newer saw (bought this December 2010) is as durable as that late, lamented little green Poulan - I'll be truly happy. One might ask, if you have an Echo CS-530, a true Professional Saw, why did you get the more humble Poulan ? Fair question. Mainly for a backup saw. Also one of our members in our Goat Farming Co-Op wanted some woodcutting done, so she ponied up $ 100 for the cheapest Poulan PP3314 saw, and I added my $ 50 to upgrade to the beefier & better outfitted Poulan Pro 4218.

Strengths:
Nice smooth power from engine. Starts totally consistent (same every time), will idle fine once engine is broken in & H / L screww & Idle screw adjusted. Normal, conventional two post bar screw / nut posts - no fussy 'quick adjust' tensioner to fall apart - (as the similar PP4228avx model has - and many hate that saw for that one feature). Nice saw case to protect saw. Auto bar oiler works well. All metal engine case (housed within outer hard plastic case).

Weaknesses:
No anti-vibe feature, just rubberized grips. (I'm ok with this, my son says it make his hands tingle - I don't even notice it - but working with it everyday you might) Oiler is engine driven, so it can make a dripping pool of bar oil if you let it idle for a long time. Poulan quality can be spotty, compared to the more 'pro' saw shop brands (like Huskquvarna, Stihl, Echo, etc) but this can be verified by using saw hard during the typical 30 day'easy return' period most retailers allow. (If this concerns you, one might pay just slightly more and get a Home Depot Echo saw, the slighly smaller, CS-310, for only $ 200, for just $ 50 more than this Poulan saw. The local Echo dealers offer the same deal, too, FYI)

I have worn out (2) of these Poulans in the span of (2) weekends. I cut down (3) pines about 30-36" in diameter. This job was much to big for a Poulan to handle. The first saw stopped working on the first day of use. I brought it home in the morning and used it on and off for about 6 hours. About 4 hours in the cylinder locked up. I managed to free it and it started back up with some work. After another couple of hours the cylinder locked up again. This time i was unable to break it loose. I exchanged the saw and the next weekend the same thing happened. I managed to free the cylinder but i could not get it running again (loss of compression). A 42 CC saw with an 18" bar should have no problems with a few large pines. These saws are horrible. If you buy this saw for more than branches you will regret it. I bought a Stihl 290 instead and I couldn't be happier with it. Spend the extra cash on a real chainsaw (Stihl or Husky). You will not regret it.

Strengths:

Weaknesses:
1. Priming bulb stopped working on both saws. 2. Very difficult to start (both saws) 3. Cylinder locked up on both saws (twice on one) 4. Gas cap not functional 5. Blades are cheap and soft 6. Very weak for engine size 7. Does not idle when hot 8. Overheats very easily

None

Weaknesses:
Saw is hard to start when it gets hot. Gas cap is a PITA to get on and off. Chain tightening mechanism is junk.. Owned this for 3 years and always hated it. Cut down three trees this summer that were about 14-16" diameter and she finally lost compression..

Saw has been in shop twice after total of about 10 hours use. Poulon refuses to fix the second time. They say I must have gotten it stuck in a tree, which I did not...

I probably got what I paid for. Not always good to be thrifty!

Strengths:
runs OK but you have to keep a new spark plug in it

Weaknesses:
Gas Cap Swells, I sanded the outside of the threads with #220 wet/dry sandpaper to get diameter of threads to 1.475 inches. Careful not to damage o-ring seat. They sent me a new cap and suggested expensive gas without ethanol in it. I don't know why they didn't change composition of the replacement cap.

Summary:
Poulan used to make great saws. but not any more, they are all plastic pieces of junk. Why oh why did Poulan have to cheapen their saws up??? I remember the first Poulan saw I bought, it was a model 361 an all metal saw, bought it at a saw shop back in the mid 70's, great saw, unlike the plastic crap they make today...! I no longer buy anything with the name Poulan on it, and the new plastic Homelites are just as bad. What a pity, what a shame that two great companies now offer plastic pieces of crap...!

Strengths:
Not to many

Weaknesses:
Just about everything.

Summary:
If the guy in the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" had used the Poulan PRO PP4218A, there would't have been any victims, because the saw never would have started. The Poulan PRO PP4218A is junk. Just junk.

Strengths:
Zero.

Weaknesses:
No durability. Problematic starting from Day One. Won't start at all after about 10 hours of use – not consecutive hours, but TOTAL hours. Won't hold an idle, no matter how much you try to adjust it.

Summary:
Only good if you have a job that is going to last less then a tank of gas. Lousy for firewood cutting as they do """not""" last and cost more in lost production, frustration.

Strengths:
Cuts Well when working

Weaknesses:
Garbage once it gets hot, will not start and the piston rings go bad faster then egg salad in the hot sun.

Summary:
Has worked for me for 7 years on a farm with lots of spring and fall work. I can tell you on exactly what pull it will start - it is that reliable. So I put up with all the other annoyances for reliability and price. I've replaced the clutch twice and the chain oil worm gear once.

Strengths:
Reliable starter; great price; easy parts to find. Cuts great.

Weaknesses:
Gas cap has to be modified after a year to get on/off easily. (Just pare it down with a utility knife.) Chain tightening screws don't hold well. Stripped the front one because it is housed in plastic and now the whole screw turns.

Summary:
For the money I spent, I should have saved and purchased a Jonsered/Husky or a Stihl. However, I modded the muffler for better flow and use 94 octane ethanol free fuel mixed at 16:1 with Stihl oil to help the single ring seal better and adjusted the jetting accordingly, and it seemed to wake up a bit. I keep the chain sharp and that helps as well. I may try to bump the compression ratio a bit in the near future, and maybe advance the timing if this is possible. I will be purchasing a Jonsered CS 2166 soon, but I am keeping this little saw to experiment with.

Strengths:
Inexpensive, starts and even cuts wood, once the carburetor is adjusted. The included case is nice, as is the spare chain. You will need it. It usually starts in about three pulls when the proper sequence is followed. It will work fine for pruning and light cutting.

Weaknesses:
Jetted far too lean from the factory, which explains the large number of scored cylinders I have read about. The engine would not idle for more than a few seconds, which I was able to correct with carburetor adjustment. I had to purchase a 21 spline tool to adjust the carb on this thing. It is really a gutless saw in stock trim.

Summary:
BEST BUY for a great saw, would put up against the high priced stihl and cut just as much wood.

Strengths:
Bought brand new in 2001 , it is now March of 2017, never had a problem with it until last weekend 2/26/2017 bar oiler quit working, chain brake wore out and drive sprocket is getting worn. I have cut over 100 cord of oak, hickory elm locust hackberry all hardwoods never a problem starting, idles fine, no problems with gas cap, bought it for $169 at a local dealer, never a problem, I went online and ordered the parts that wore out after 16 years of use, doing the work myself, it's easy if you have any skills at all. you city boys that bitch about the gas cap being hard to get off need to soak your hands in dish water and let your wife go cut wood.
