Summary:
This is a great saw to have around. It is a little heavy to be using to just limb some trees or cut up small diameter trees (it will do that in a hurry though). But it is great at bringing down the big stuff and cutting up some serious trees. I am very happy with this saw and would buy again.
Strengths:
This is a well balanced chain saw and it has some nice features. Like the button to help cut down on the engine compression at start up to make it easier to pull the cord. It also has a gas primer bubble and very good power. I've been in some heavy oak and walnut, I have no complaints about the power and ease of use of this saw.
Weaknesses:
None that I have found

Summary:
This is a really nice "everything" saw. Like a pretty lady in the doorway, it promised the world....35+ years of Stihl/Jonsreds...this sailor fell for her wink.
Really handles well....starts easily when you get used to the "pull-don't pull" choke/fast idle combo lever. Faster than a scalded cat...and enough power to fell with a sharp chain. The only thing I hate more than the std. 18" bar is dropping a tree on my truck. GET A 16" BAR. GET A PRO ROLLERNOSE BAR AND 3 CHAINS. ROTATE CHAINS AND REPLACE CHAINS,ROLLERNOSE, AND SPROCKET ALL AT THE SAME TIME...Once a year with a lot of farm / firewood use. NEVER RUN A CHAIN DOWN TO NUBS AND REPLACE A NEW CHAIN ON AN OLD SPROCKET OR ROLLERNOSE.
I really loved this saw...and used it as a second saw behind felling with a huge Jonsreds 90 for everything...limbing, firewood, around the sawmill, everywhere on the farm. Nearing 60 yrs. I have learned to enjoy a lighter saw.We log...saw...kiln dry...build furniture...and heat 8000 sq ft with wood on our 160 acre "tree farm".
I hate this saw so much that I bought another one when the first one burned up. I am going to see if I use all the tricks that I detailed here, I can get it to last.
It is just such a perfect saw that I have to try again.
Strengths:
Fast, Light, Comfortable, starts easily, all a homeowner or light/moderate farm/woodlot needs.
Weaknesses:
THIS *x?/>!! SAW only has 1 ring on the piston....I burned one up using it heavy for 2 years. I know of two other friends who have burned up similar models also.
I would run a 32:1 mix rather than the std. 50:1...I WOULD NOT LEAN IT OUT UNTIL IT SCREAMS...and this saw will scream. Keep it loping along. USE COMPRESSED AIR WITH EVERY USE....ALL OVER.
ANOTHER LITTLE GLITCH. In 35+ years of saw use, I have never had a saw that the oil hole on the bar clogged as much as this one. The bar will heat and run dry. It took me several months of chains stretching to realize what was happening. It will slow down, then plug completely...A LOT, AND ALL THE TIME.At first you don't recognize the problem, because the oiler keeps pumping. The oil just runs down the case and into the sawdust stream. So, the oil tank is empty when it should be.
I clean the bar every couple of tanks of gas now.

Summary:
Ive had this saw for about two years, never had any problems, always started always did the job.I was only disapointed with this saw when a purchased the 346xp. The xp cuts so much faster than the Rancher, that I basicaly quit using it. I just recently traded it for a 372xp to get that balls to the wall speed. If you just cant see spending the extra cash for the xp models the Rancher is a great saw for the money. Just dont expect to keep up with the logger boys.
Strengths:
Very reliable saw, decent power and torq
Weaknesses:
not as fast as an XP

Summary:
Not a pro saw, so don't expect it to be, but it does everything I need it to do well. And remember that in the global Stihl vs Husky debate, look at the little things- such as the maker of the piston and cylinder. Mahle. For just about everyone, including Porsche.
Strengths:
With a bit of tweaking to the muffler and mixture, this saw runs great. I don't get it screaming or lean, I keep a bit of four-cycling, and am patient, and it just keeps going. No trouble taking down 24 inch Spruce and Fir trees. I am thinking about putting in the 460 piston and cylinder to get a bit more grunt, but for a farm saw, it has been hard to beat in two years of hard, nearly daily felling and bucking use.
Weaknesses:
A bit heavy, small gas tank, and fragile-looking switches (though they do take a beating). Wish it had the more robust switches bigger Husky's have.

other 455 owners and they all had the same problem, With no apparant fix.
the dealers that i spoke with said that it was not a widespread problem. BS
For all you would be experts out there it is not because of the oiler system

i liked it enough that i bought an identical one for a spare to keep boxed and stored for future use.
i meticulously hand file my saws and this original chain is all but gone now. i have to say this saw is a huge bang for the buck chainsaw and i really enjoy using it.
Strengths:
low down torque / really gets down and grunts on the low end. very good vibration dampening. starts dependably w/ just 3 pulls if you start according to directions. exhaust sounds very inspirational like a ferrari.
Weaknesses:
small gas tank. to be truthful, when it runs out, you should rest any ways.

Summary:
Even though its well made, I cannot recommend it due to the bar issue. My old .028 was more reliable and heavier duty, even with a smaller engine.
Strengths:
good power, light enough, durable (except chain and bar)
Weaknesses:
the bar wears out to fast. It is high quality steel and seems well machined, but it tends to run dry (easily clogged oil port?) and after a while it moves up and down too much. This can cause a lot of frustrating maintenance in the middle of a job and is a big weakness in an otherwise excellent saw.

Summary:
These are best for the NON professional logger, if you use your saw every day all day long then I wouldnt recomend it. If you use it once or twice a week or less then its perfect. Unless you are willing to clean and tighten the chain , bar , oil port, and filter, every hour. (8 times a day)
I give it a high score for what I bought it for. You dont haul trash with a farrari, if you did you would rate the car poor.
Strengths:
Rancher is just that, For the ranch. It is dependable when you need it, and can handle any job. Easy to clean/take apart, easy to find replacement parts when you need it. Just try to find a chain or bar for another brand out in the boonies, but everyone sells bars and chains for these. Cuts fast enough for a non pro logger. Easy to start in the Cold ( Alaska), steady power in the heat ( Arizona). Price Great! lots of accessories fit this for lumber mills and cutting log homes
Weaknesses:
Small gas tank for an experienced logger who wants to cut for more than 30 minutes. Must clean every 2 tanks of gas( once per hour). Stock chain leaves somthing to be desired.

Overall, one heck of a machine. Also, one heck of a flaw. It's like driving a Porche with a cracked windshield.
Strengths:
Power. Quality. Well built. Reputable manufacturer. Starts easy. Runs well.
Weaknesses:
Oil. Just like the other reviewers. I almost burned out my bar. However, it wasn't a simple plugged hole in the bar. I plugged the oil distribution point, and the pump seized up. Had it replaced and it stopped pumping oil again after one use. I have to take it back to the shop again. I'm very disappointed with the need for constant maint on this machine.

I wanted to use the saw to cut logs into lumber and instead of the saw workign as it should have hung an oil bottle up with a drip line like an I V line for an emergency room patient. The manual oiling makes it so that I can cut the wood, I can't take the saw back now and I am saving my money for a Sthil instead.

good torque and power. easy to start.
Weaknesses:
the bar oiler never works properly. my 455 rancher is currently in the shop to have oiler fixex for the 3rd time in 9 months. everything is clean and clear filled with proper oil. still doesnt work. oil just dumps out the back on to my boots. would not recommend this unit to anyone. this chainsaw is unreliable and not worth the headache of having to constantly repair it.

Summary:
This is not a review, but a question. I bought a 455 Rancher (E-tech II) several years ago to take down and buck-up a water oak that died on my property. Embarassed to say that I never got around to doing that job ... no urgency because its location was not a liability issue. So, the saw has sat in my workshop, completely dry, never been started except by the reputable dealer from whom I bought it. Now, I want to start using it, and HERE'S THE QUESTION: based on the large number of complaints I see about the bar/chain oiling system, I gotta ask you guys: has there been a "factory fix" that I can have my dealer retro-fit to the saw? If not, can you give me some preventative advice? And, thanks to all of you for making the problem known.

I have used the saw to cut firewood for sell plus firewood for 3 of my relatives families since 2005. I maintain the saw, keeping it clean especially around the oil pump and the holes in the blade. I couldn't ask a saw to be more reliable. I have put several chains on it, but it has the original bar.

plenty of power for a saw in that price range

Summary:
I have owned this saw for two years now. It replaced a 1989 Husky saw that finally quit on me. I have used it heavily and have never had any of the oiling issues that people are talking about, but I do use the Husquvarna bar oil, as recommended in the manual.
In the past two years:
- 10-12 chains (get Oregon chains...the Husky ones suck!)
- one bar replaced (Oregon)
- one chain sprocket replaced
- one spark plug
That's it. I'd say it's been pretty reliable. When it gets cold out it wants to lean out in the higher RPMs though. This is in East Texas (Tyler, TX).
Strengths:
Plenty of power.
The compression release is a nice touch.
Weaknesses:
Small gas tank. Doesn't like cold weather.

hard to start have to manualy spray gas in carb to get it going. Spoke to tech at Husqvarna and was told these units only have 110 lbs of compresion. My 25 year old Homelite Super XL12 has 140 lbs compresion. The Husky has a 1 ring piston my Homelite has 2 ring piston. My project is to rebuild my other Homelite SXL12. I have a Homelite 925 that runs great. I may try to take this husky back to store for a refund.

Summary:
I've worked this saw hard for over 6 years and it has never failed to start or perform well in a variety of temperatures ranging from below zero to high 80's. Has great low end torque and easily fells some mighty oaks with a sharp chain. I've probably cut 60-70 cords of red and white oak with this saw, in addition to some cherry, cedar and locust. A bit unwieldy with the 24 inch bar on it, but has more than adequate power to drop the big stuff. More balanced with the 18 inch bar, but a little heavy for limbing. I've not experienced any of the oiler problems others have mentioned. Still using two original bars (18 and 24).
Strengths:
Powerful, reliable, easy to start w/compression release and primer bulb
Weaknesses:
small fuel tank as many have noted, leaks oil when stored in case, a little heavy

Great saw.
Strengths:
I have used this saw cutting 6+ cord of wood per year for the past 5 years and the saw has run great. I keep it meticulously maintained and hope it keeps on running for many more years. I bought it brand new out of the box for $150.00 so I feel I got a great deal when I look at other people paying $400.00 for a brand new one. Always starts on the 5th pull. Oiler has only quit working one time and I simply had to clean out the side ports where the oil comes from the body of the saw to the bar. Very dependable.

None.

Very good saw, if not the best in it's class.
Strengths:
I have used this saw for heavy live oaks and pecon tree felling and bucking for better than 1 year. I haven't had the oil problems others report, and I ride it hard and put it up wet! I have replaced the chain only at reasonable intervals, and never cleaned the unit. That being said, I do admit to the saw leaking a small amount of oil when not in use. A good saw is a must for me, as I own large acerage, and I feel this one fits the bill.

Love Lowes. I hope Husqvarna inspects the saw and improves their quality control...I could have been seriously injured.
Strengths:
Free carrying case with purchase
Weaknesses:
Purchased a 455 Rancher from Lowes on 9-2-2011. On 9-3-2011 I filled with bar oil, filled with 50:1 gas oil mixture...went through start up procedure...chain saw caught on fire as soon as it started. Fire was on the bar side of the saw...melted the plastic housing. Lucky it did not explode...using the hose I put the fire out. Guess they should recommend fire extinguishers with Husqavarna purchases. Tried calling the Husqavarna Help center, brochure says open on Saturdays from 8-3pm...mesaage on phone says they are closed on the weekend. Returned to Lowes and they replaced it with NO questions asked, replaced my bar oil too. The new saw started and runs fine. Not sure I like Husqavarna but I absolutely love Lowes customer service.

I would purchase another one hands down. Very dependable. Always starts on the 5th pull. Seems to cut faster on the lower rpm's. I run the oil/gas mixture kind of rich in oil. I'm told that it's best to have more lubrication than less.
Strengths:
Cuts like a beaver on crack. Have had the saw for 5+ years and have cut 6+ cord of wood per year. Ran it hard cutting dirty old fenceposts in 95+ degree heat during this summer and other dead wood and it never gave up. Just kept on cutting. Everything on the saw works great.
Am pretty meticulous about maintenance so if you maintain the saw well, it will take care of you.

Strengths:

Fragile, I knocked a hole in the gas tank loading the truck with firewood when a chunk hit the saw. The oiler has been a problem to me also and I have given up on my sawshop to fix it. I've had it repaired twice, keep it impecebly clean, (like cleaning it after every tank of gas... which is about 25 minutes.) and it STILL wreaks havoc on my chains. Worthless without correctly functioning oiler. With all the oiler complaints, you 'd think that Husqvarna would have come up with a fix???
Otherwise it's $400 gone to waste. Wish I had bough a Stihl. German gear is always more dependable that Swedish one.
Strengths:
None
Weaknesses:
There are 4 horizontal oiling slots next to each other that should match oiling hole in the bar. It seems oil is only flowing through the slot furthest back nearest to the chain sprocket (not through the front 3 slots). With a slack chain, oil flows through the bar oiling hole, when I tension the chain and the bar moves forward, oil does not go in the bar oiling hole but drips down. I dismantled and cleaned everything to no avail. Oil flow screw adjustment seem to get more oil through the one open slot but does make it flow through the others.

Summary:
Should have bought a xp series or Stihl. Very disappointed in this Husqvarna product and Husky should offer owners help or incentive to repair or replace with another model. I have had 18+ years of success with Husqvarna products with little or no problems with their products, but this 455 is the sorriest piece of s**t they have ever sold. This time they really gave the finger to loyal owners and never thought a thing of it. Do not buy this model, burn your money instead... You will get more satisfaction.
Strengths:
Mid range saw decent for the money, but homeowner model is the best thing I can comment on. Saw is easy to use, and offers a little power for a cheap price. Get ready to spend your money on bars and chains with your savings though!
Weaknesses:
Bar Oiler pump is a F***ing joke. Plugs consistanly causing overheating of chain and bar. Prepare to expect 2 hours life out of a bar and chain set when using this saw. You must take clutch assy off after each use to properly clean the oil feed line from pluging if the pump doesn't die. It will plug up after every use and often will run dry before you notice the chain getting hot and stretching. After making six cuts you will find the chain too loose. This is because its eating the bar up. Stop! break down and clean, retension chain. take six more cuts, repeat process until you get tired and buy a decent saw.
