Overall a good tool for the money. It would have been nice if an extra chain was provided. I would have given the CS440 a higher score if it was not so difficult to get it started initially.

Good power for cutting medium size trees, branches, and etc. Relatively low vibration/smooth. Using 18" Bar. Price was right compared to other makes ($299.00).

Was hard to start when cold. Once started no problems. I'm not a real fan of the anti kick device supplied for attaching to the tip of the bar...But I guess this a prudent accessory to include for those potential users that are not familiar with the proper use and/dangers inherit with chainsaws.

Second remove high speed limiter cap(with hook&pick tools)and increase high speed mixture as much as possible before bogging.If this is not done engine will run to hot and warp plastic insulator plate that carb is mounted to,causing vacuum leaks(hard starting,poor idle and no-run condition.)This is a common problem with plastic insulator type intakes.When you have this problem get a new insulator kit, and use gasgacinch sealer on the carb gasket! Third paper air cleaner element loads up with sawdust quickly which is drawn into the engine(NOT GOOD)!!! Use a portable air tank in the feild and keep element blown out every time you stop to refuel!

Good power, great torque it keeps pulling when other 45cc saw would quit, light and handles nice. I did a small muffler mod on mine and adjusted the carb as needed. Most need to be adjusted a little richer than factory thanks to EPA regs, then they start great. I did some timed cuts against my 044 Stihl 044 = 19 seconds CS440 = 25 seconds, not to bad for a 45cc saw compared to a 70cc Stihl (one of thier best) There's a lot of metal in this saw compared to other homeowner saws. You need to keep a sharp chain on this thing just like any good chainsaw. The Echo has plenty of power to get through anything that you'll encounter in the woods and its going to be reliable, which is always extremely important in deciding which chainsaw to buy.

Strengths:
Starts easy even after its been sitting for over a month. Idles and Runs strong and predictable all day. Japan makes good engines. I use this saw on some mountain property in California that I own. The Echo is light enough and storng enough and reliable enough to not need a backup saw, although I still have one. Price to Performance on Echo is really hard to beat. I have not found that I need to monkey with the factory settings even when using this saw all day at 4,000 ft. elevation.

Weaknesses:
None that I have seen. Although I wish that the chains were a little less expensive. Also I'm not sure if Echo still sells this model through Home Depot, I believe that the new model has a smaller displacement.

Summary:
I have owned all makes of saws. And this is by far the best. 10 times better that the Stilh saws. And 10 times better price. I plan on getting another on when this one wears out. If it ever wares out!

Strengths:
Built like a tank! No problems with starting. Starts tight up, even when below freezing. Nice car type air filter. Lots of power. I use a 18" bar. Might be a bit weak with a 20" bar.

Weaknesses:
Heavy, but the price you pay to actually have a saw that has some metal in it. Unlike the Stilh saws that are about 90% plastic. Hard to find parts. Not many Echo dealers around hear. And Echo dose not sell parts on line.

I've owned this saw for a year with probably 50 tanks of fuel through it. opening up the muffler and returning the carb richer and you will see major improvements in performance, but this does void the warranty.

Strengths:
5 year consumer warranty, rebuild-able, dual ringed cylinder, magnesium, case chainsaw, with a good air filter system at a lower price.

Weaknesses:
majorly underpowered for a 45cc saw, compared to the top of the line chainsaw manufacturers. installed full chisel .325 chain and it bogs down even more.

Summary:
Be warned that Home Depot shows this model on their web site as available in stores only (not online) but they don't seem to be carrying it. Instead, for the same price, they have the CS400 which has a smaller engine. BTW, the CS400 doesn't appear on their web site. I had the "wrong" one in my cart before I realized that it was a much less powerful unit for the same price. It went back on the shelf.

This is a great saw. I have had it for two years. It always starts within three pulls. Read the manual that comes with it. I have cut timber 30" inches in diameter, it will do it, just don't try to force it. I have run my saw in temps from 18 to 90 degrees. I would buy this saw again. Strengths:
If you follow the starting directions in the manual and use fresh fuel, it starts within the first 3 or 4 pulls in any weather. Runs silky smooth and quiet. Durably built. Feels good and well-balanced in your hands.

Weaknesses:
I've used stronger saws in the same cc category, but none that were so easy all around to work with. You don't have to think with this saw; just crank it and cut.

Summary:
Best mid range saw I've ever operated. Stihl 029 or 290 depending on the year is a great saw as well as Husqvarna Rancher and 350 which probably is the closest competitors (all of which cost more anywhere you look).

Strengths:
Easiest starting chainsaw I've ever ran. I've worked for tree triming businesses, outdoor power equipment sales and service centers, and power equipment rental stores and ran them all from Stihl and Husqvarna with 28 inch bars down 14 inch arborists saws. Reading some of the other reviews I think some guys are doing it wrong. Click the toggle switch on, lock throtle open, pull choke all the way out pull till motor turns round (never takes me more than three pulls almost always turns over after two). Then push choke 1/3 of the way and pull, should start right up and by the time you grab throtle to disengage throtle lock shut choke off and with 2 or 3 seconds of reving it up and down your ready to tear in! Follow that starting procedure no matter what temperature or humidity you're working in never fails and I've ran 4 or 5 of those CS-440's so I'm sure I didn't just get a lucky one...

In my 30 years of experience using chainsaws, I found this one to be one the most user user-friendly saws that I have ever used. It has Good balance, lightweight, quiet and very reliable. I've never had issues with starting it, normally the second pull; and as another poster stated let it idle for a minute after it starts up and it's good to go. I have a few other Echo, Stihl and Husky saws but this one is my favorite of the bunch for general use.

Strengths:
Light weight and reliable. Good power for a 45cc saw. Can run 16", 18" and 20" bars, so it is pretty versatile. No problems getting started in 5 plus years of use.
