Would rate this much higher if it started right, but by the time you get it started your to tired to work with it!

Strengths:
runs good when it runs

Weaknesses:
EXTREMELY hard starting. If it's cold out it won't start at all, when warm it doesn't want to start either. when you get it started, it does run well.

Summary:
Overall a good tool for the money. It would have been nice if an extra chain was provided. I would have given the CS440 a higher score if it was not so difficult to get it started initially.

Strengths:
Good power for cutting medium size trees, branches, and etc. Relatively low vibration/smooth. Using 18" Bar. Price was right compared to other makes ($299.00).

Weaknesses:
Was hard to start when cold. Once started no problems. I'm not a real fan of the anti kick device supplied for attaching to the tip of the bar...But I guess this a prudent accessory to include for those potential users that are not familiar with the proper use and/dangers inherit with chainsaws.

Summary:
With mods very good!

Strengths:
Good power to weight ratio. Well thought out design. High quality japanese components.

Weaknesses:
Good saw for minimal use. However if you cut ten plus cords a year some mods are needed.First mix oil&gas at 32:1 ratio(4oz.per gal)Factory ratio is to lean for engine longeviety!!! Second remove high speed limiter cap(with hook&pick tools)and increase high speed mixture as much as possible before bogging. If this is not done engine will run to hot and warp plastic insulator plate that carb is mounted to,causing vacuum leaks(hard starting, poor idle and no-run condition.)This is a common problem with plastic insulator type intakes. When you have this problem get a new insulator kit, and use gasgacinch sealer on the carb gasket! Third paper air cleaner element loads up with sawdust quickly which is drawn into the engine(NOT GOOD)!!! Use a portable air tank in the feild and keep element blown out every time you stop to refuel!

Great

Strengths:
Good power, great torque it keeps pulling when other 45cc saw would quit, light and handles nice. I did a small muffler mod on mine and adjusted the carb as needed. Most need to be adjusted a little richer than factory thanks to EPA regs, then they start great. I did some timed cuts against my 044 Stihl 044 = 19 seconds CS440 = 25 seconds, not to bad for a 45cc saw compared to a 70cc Stihl (one of thier best) There's a lot of metal in this saw compared to other homeowner saws. Summary:
You need to keep a sharp chain on this thing just like any good chainsaw. The Echo has plenty of power to get through anything that you'll encounter in the woods and its going to be reliable, which is always extremely important in deciding which chainsaw to buy.

Strengths:
Starts easy even after its been sitting for over a month. Idles and Runs strong and predictable all day. Japan makes good engines. I use this saw on some mountain property in California that I own. The Echo is light enough and storng enough and reliable enough to not need a backup saw, although I still have one. Price to Performance on Echo is really hard to beat. I have not found that I need to monkey with the factory settings even when using this saw all day at 4,000 ft. elevation.

Weaknesses:
None that I have seen. Although I wish that the chains were a little less expensive. Also I'm not sure if Echo still sells this model through Home Depot, I believe that the new model has a smaller displacement.

Summary:
I have owned all makes of saws. And this is by far the best. 10 times better that the Stilh saws. And 10 times better price. I plan on getting another on when this one wears out. If it ever wares out!

Strengths:
Built like a tank! No problems with starting. Starts tight up, even when below freezing. Nice car type air filter. Lots of power. I use a 18" bar. Might be a bit weak with a 20" bar.

Weaknesses:
Heavy, but the price you pay to actually have a saw that has some metal in it. Unlike the Stilh saws that are about 90% plastic. Hard to find parts. Not many Echo dealers around hear. And Echo dose not sell parts on line.

Best mid range saw I've ever operated. Stihl 029 or 290 depending on the year is a great saw as well as Husqvarna Rancher and 350 which probably is the closest competitors (all of which cost more anywhere you look).

Strengths:
Easiest starting chainsaw I've ever ran. I've worked for tree triming businesses, outdoor power equipment sales and service centers, and power equipment rental stores and ran them all from Stihl and Husqvarna with 28 inch bars down 14 inch arborists saws. Reading some of the other reviews I think some guys are doing it wrong. Click the toggle switch on, lock throtle open, pull choke all the way out pull till motor turns round (never takes me more than three pulls almost always turns over after two). Then push choke 1/3 of the way and pull, should start right up and by the time you grab throtle to disengage throtle lock shut choke off and with 2 or 3 seconds of reving it up and down your ready to tear in! Follow that starting procedure no matter what temperature or humidity you're working in never fails and I've ran 4 or 5 of those CS-440's so I'm sure I didn't just get a lucky one...

In my 30 years of experience using chainsaws, I found this one to be one the most user user-friendly saws that I have ever used. It has Good balance, lightweight, quiet and very reliable. I've never had issues with starting it, normally the second pull; and as another poster stated let it idle for a minute after it starts up and it's good to go. I have a few other Echo, Stihl and Husky saws but this one is my favorite of the bunch for general use.

Summary:
I think it's good buy. I havent had any issues with mine that other posters have had, I've been around saws for years and each one has it's own personality. I normally take two or three saws when I go out, small 30cc saws for limbing and move to larger as the need develops. I have found this saw does well at all phases. As any product, only buy at a local dealer that services them also. I have 6 echo chainsaws and all are 5 plus years old with many hours of use and never had issues with them, the get used pretty hard. I have around 17 saws stihl's, poulan's, mcculloch's,homelite's and echo's. For the larger stuff I grab the ms-440 or Echo cs-680, but for general cutting this does well and is my favorite in the 45cc class, ironically due to its ease of start.

Strengths:
Good balance and reliable. I havent had any starting issues that other posters have mentioned. I've had this unit for 5 years and has been my primary saw for cutting wood for 3 houses that burn year around. I use on 50 acres plus acres of walnut and oaks, it has done everything that I wanted.

Weaknesses:
I have noticed it very easy bump the toggle on/off switch. I've done it and several of my friends have also during startup, not the saws fault but I thought it was worth mentioning. I do like the range of bars that other posters mentioned, but if you need a 20" bar all the time, get a more powerfull unit. I'm not knocking this saw, but I've never seen a 45cc saw with a 20" bar pull very fast large hardwood regardless of the name on the saw. Give the saw some time it will get the job with 20", does good with the 18", excells with 16". I will grant the safety chain does slow the saw some.

Very happy with it for cutting trees in the 24 to 30 inch diameter range. A good tool for the 299.00 I paid for it.

Strengths:
Always starts easy and runs strong. Has good quality and is well balanced. Easy to get parts for. Has run well for 7 years now.

Weaknesses:
Really needs no bar bigger than 16 inch, although the 18 is OK in softwood. For oak a 16 is about all it can handle. Was set too lean as delivered from the factory, resulting in bogging just off idle. Once carb was richened, both low and high, ran perfectly. The EPA regs make these have less power than they should and increase danger of running too hot or sticking a piston. Richen it up right away for a long and happy life.

In the Midsized category I give it and Overall 9 out of 10

Strengths:
Right size, reliable and long lasting. I never regret having purchased my 440 which I use regularly and often for 5 years now. This old baby still works fine and runs strong, but I am thinking about buying a new 440 soon to have around as back up. Good design easy to take apart for cleaning. Easy to service.

Weaknesses:
None worth noting

Summary:
I have had this saw for approx 3 years. It has seen a great deal of use and has worked perfectly. It starts great and is relatively light for the power. I have owned a Craftsman as well as a McCullough saw and the Echo cs440 is 10x better.. As you can tell, I really like this saw. Keep a sharp chain and it will cut a lot of wood.

Strengths:
lots of power for its weight.

Weaknesses:
chain adjuster screw seems week. mine bent easily. No big deal.

Summary:
I purchased my saw in 2008 with a weed trimmer due to the 5 year warranty. I thought man this is a no brainer, good company good saw great warranty. I use this saw very little I have cut up maybe 3 trees and did some trimming with it. Now i followed the manufacturers recomendation to the letter. i only used mid grade 89 oct gas and i use there echo oil in a one gallion gas can only used for the saw and my weed trimmer. very easy 1 gallion of gas and one bottle of oil. Well the saw quit running about 4 weeks ago and ECHO wont honor there warranty. I PAID $329 for the saw and they Want $389 to fix it. Echo claims it was run lean and it caused the issue. if it was lean its a problem with the saw remember good gas and there mix oil. Im still in a battle with them but judgeing from what i have read it may be usless like the ECHO warranty...... BUYER BEWARE..... I WONT SAY DONT BUY ONE BUT I WILL SAY...... BUYER BEWARE.......

Summary:
Nice light saw that cuts good and last a long time . As with a lot of new saws thank to the EPA saws need the carb adjusted before running them, gas and tempature make a difference and most Echo saws are set to lean from the factory, either the dealer or the buyer HAS to do the adjustment or they will burn up. Also gas doesn't store good, if you let the saw sit for a year or so and it doesn't run right DON'T run it, either clean the carb or get it cleaned.

Strengths:
Light, decent power, long life

None

Summary:
Fifth saw and absolutely the best I've owned. Keep two sharpened chains available at all times and can cut all day without problems. Best warranty on the market, tho I've never had to use it.

Strengths:
Good price, easy start, great power, easy on gas and oil.

Weaknesses:
Chain stretch fairly quickly.

Summary:
It's a v nice compromise in size for the general user and light wt and it lasts due to quality and if it's hard to start, it's you, or outta gas. Best chainsaw I've owned. Ideal midrange compromise for many. Good reasons it's $300, not $150. Geeze, those are a pain... If you see one on sale, grab it or it will vanish. Better than a $150 gas is a $100 electric and a $50 (no joke) extension cord. I score v harshly. If a 1-10 scale it would see the 4's become 9's.

Strengths:
2017 & sometimes not run for a yr but w gas StaBil it starts nicely. Full choke 1 pull, 2/3 choke 2nd pull & it is likely to fire. Use mostly @ home but some pro work. V old CS-440 16". May upgrade to 18. Light wt. Reliable. For a home owner maybe it's almost too.good. When a cheap one says (I read the fine print) meets EPA for 150 hrs... PERIOD/ may run but if you are ecology minded it's RIP time. But the Echo says, at 600 hrs do this maint. Each 600 thereafter, repeat ad nauseum, it reminds me of a reliable Honda. It's gonna last.

Weaknesses:
Hard to find 16" narrow kerf blades. Even 18's. Chain tension could be easier - then lazy folks would do it more and it's really needed when a chain is new, which is counter-intuitive for many. Then you homebodies get busy and keep working... cool your jets and check that slack or ruin a $25 chain and your spare time and pride. And fill the oiler! ;>)
